About us

In 1915 Stephen E. Bayley settled in Pine Point, dug clams in Jones Creek and trapped lobsters off the coast to feed his wife and four sons. When there was enough left over to sell, his wife Ella would cook the lobsters and sell them to people through her kitchen window.

The years passed and the business grew enough so that Steve and his sons bought lobsters from other local fishermen, and built tanks so that they could store larger quantities of lobsters in order to sell to restaurants and other dealers. The business is now owned and run by Steve’s grandson Bill and his great-granddaughter Susan.

We have sold over 30 million pounds of lobsters. We are pioneers in the shipping of lobsters. Our lobsters were originally shipped to restaurants via train in wooden barrels, and we were one of the very first lobster pounds to ship lobsters overnight. We started mail-order shipping the first year that overnight shipping became available in the U.S. and have shipped many thousands of packages since.

Not long before Steve passed away in 1978, he commented that perhaps someday there would even be a computer in his lobster pound. We are very sorry that he can not be here to see what the Internet has done to spread the good name of his lobster pound and make lobsters available to people across the country overnight. His small business has become a New England tradition for generations of vacationing families and locals alike.

Be an Informed Seafood Consumer

It is important that you know and trust your seafood purveyor, so that you may believe in the freshness and quality of your product and the reliability of the staff whose job it is to send it to you.

Many online companies that you will find selling Maine lobsters middle-men, taking orders and having other ship out products that they never even see. Many are not even based in Maine, some are just call centers, who sell their telephone services, then once again, order the product from another facility and never see their product. This has been a winning financial combination for a lot of people, but we at Bayley’s Lobster Pound believe that when you order Maine lobsters, you expect old-fashioned New England pride to go into each of these packages, and it does here. When you call us you are calling directly into our lobster pound in Pine Point, Maine. Your order is packed here and UPS picks up at the door every afternoon. All of our prepared products are hand-made right here as well.

Lobsters and other seafood are brought in daily, and if you ever want to come see us and how we do our work you are welcome to visit. We have a retail area where you can choose you own lobsters and have us cook them while you wait. While your lobsters cook, try a Bayley’s Lobster Roll. Bayley’s Lobster Pound is the originator of this delicacy.
